This workshop will explore the creation of the musical production 1619: The Journey of a People. Artist and City Colleges of Chicago Professor Ted Williams takes participants through the conception of a justice-based theatrical production. Designed to fulfill the biblical call to remember, 1619: The Journey of a People dramatizes the 400 year experience of African-Americans including the theological and ideological concepts at the core of the liberation struggle. The workshop explores both historic issues and current controversies while providing guidance on building community and the local economy through the production process.
Ted Williams III is teaches Political Science at the City Colleges of Chicago. He holds degrees in Public Policy Studies from the University of Chicago and Rutgers University. He has provided political commentary for various media outlets and has appeared in commercials for companies including Cheerios, Empire Carpet, and Subway. Williams is the author of the TORN the Musical, The Way Out: Christianity, Politics, and the African American Community, and of 1619: The Journey of a People. He is a former candidate for the Chicago City Council and shares life with his wife Roslyn and three children.
