Description
In North America’s distressed communities, sports are a safe haven of leadership development for young people, an environment for connection, experimentation, and growth amid realities where small mistakes can lead to staggering consequences. Much of the trauma our young people experience comes from dignity-violating institutions; emerging brain science shows how sports create an environment for trauma-healing, dignity-affirming connection and empowerment. This workshop will lay a conceptual framework for the healing power of sports in environments impacted by violence and the school-to-prison pipeline, and offer concrete tools and strategies for coaching, mentoring, and designing programs with community leadership development in mind. Speakers: Dr. Jeff Biddle, Turan De’Angelo Rush
