Appalachian Immersion Internship

The Community of Good Works, located in Athens, Ohio, (host city to Ohio University) is praying for the LORD to send laborers to serve alongside us in our ministry with people in poverty. We have been providing care and community to adults and children who struggle with poverty, homelessness, and vulnerability (addiction, mental distress) since 1981.

Good Works welcomes Appalachian Immersion Interns for 4, 5, or 9 months of the year (usually tied to a college semester or more). We are looking for people who are willing to live in Christian community and be part of welcoming people from all walks of life and build relationships particularly with people who are struggling with poverty as you grow in your walk with God through study, reflection, and spiritual practices including hospitality, gratitude, promise-keeping, and truth-telling.

We are looking for mission-minded individuals to join us as we share lives and grow together as disciples of Jesus and care for adults and children experiencing the effects of poverty and homelessness.

This experience is ideal for those considering a “gap-year” before or after college.

We are looking primarily for people who love Jesus and are teachable; we provide training for skills necessary. In addition to housing and food through the duration of the internship (4, 5, or 9 months), interns are provided with a monthly stipend.

Many full-time staff have previously been Appalachian Immersion interns.
