Description
The Doctrine of Discovery is the theological justification behind explicit injustices like discovery, Indian removal, and the ethnic cleansing of Manifest Destiny, as well as slavery, Jim Crow laws, and Christian Nationalism. Many CCDA organizations work both within and alongside marginalized communities to confront these injustices and bring healing. But the Doctrine of Discovery also creates a diseased theological imagination that is much harder to identify and even more difficult to confront. In this workshop, Mark Charles and Soong-Chan Rah will take content from their recent book Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery and examine how the dysfunctional theological imagination of the Doctrine of Discovery is not only evident in the ongoing struggle against explicit systemic racism but is frequently found in the everyday practices and long-term vision and goals of both political parties, as well as most Churches and Christian organizations.
