In the face of social isolation and division, churches can refocus on helping people cultivate deeper, more diverse relationships. Participants will envision practical ways to connect with neighbors, cultivate community with people who are struggling alone, and build relationships with people across differences.
Heidi Unruh (UnruhHeidi@gmail.com) helps churches care well for their neighbors, as a ministry consultant, trainer and coach. Heidi develops practical resources for community ministry, with a special passion for uplifting vulnerable children and families. Her writings include co-authoring the books Churches That Make a Difference; Hope for Children in Poverty; and The Salt & Light Guidebook. Heidi volunteers with a “thrive collaborative” in her community of Hutchinson, KS.
Joy Skjegstad (joynonprofit@juno.com) is a consultant and trainer helping nonprofits and churches to achieve strategic focus, develop effective community ministry, and present themselves in clear and visionary language. She is the author of four books, including 7 Creative Models for Community Ministry and Starting a Nonprofit at Your Church. She has over 30 years of experience starting and growing nonprofits and church-based community ministries, including serving on staff at Park Avenue United Methodist Church and Sanctuary Covenant Church, both in Minneapolis.
As a team, Joy and Heidi provide coaching and customized training to help churches and nonprofits develop effective community engagement. Joy and Heidi recently coauthored the book Real Connections: Ministries to Strengthen Church and Community Relationships, offering practical guidance to help churches become hubs for relational ministry and community connections.
