Throughout history, the Christian faith and its scriptures have been weaponized to oppress and control people of color and women. My Grandfather was a boarding school survivor, he went on to work as a translator for white missionaries on our reservation and even helped translate the Bible into our Navajo language. He was never treated as an equal by the missionaries he worked with, nor was he seen as a full minister by the church he was serving. This workshop will address the dilemma of why it has been two thousand years since the death and resurrection of Christ and not only does the world still struggle with acknowledging the humanity of everyone, but the Church (and Christian organizations) still struggle deeply with acknowledging everyone’s humanity. If we read the Gospels honestly and look more intentionally at how Jesus interacted with Gentiles, instead of just Jews and Samaritans, we might realize that simply asking “What would Jesus do?” is not always the right question.
