Faith-based Youth Development
This position is for Wellspring’s after-school and summer, year-round supplemental education (Kumon)
program. Wellspring is a faith-based (Christian) youth development organization located in the
Brightmoor neighborhood of Northwest Detroit. Its mission is to assist urban youth in developing
themselves spiritually, socially, academically and economically. Wellspring operates a center that
provides services that include an after-school math and reading program (Kumon), discipleship
programs, leadership and outdoor recreation, college & career readiness, and some individualized

Job Description:
• The Assistant Academic Director will assist the Academic Director in managing the Kumon
educational program (www.kumon.com). Wellspring provides this program to up to 200
elementary through high school students to become progressively more proficient in math and
reading/language arts skills. The Kumon program emphasizes self-learning and is individualized
as each student progresses at his or her own pace. Several staff and volunteers assist with the
program working one-on-one, in small groups, or roving among more independent students.
• The Assistant Academic Director position is one of program management and oversight and
includes responsibilities such as parent orientations, student assessments, maintaining program
standards, oversight of classroom, matching of volunteers and program staff with students,
parent conferences, data posting, lesson planning, and grading class work and well as
homework. The position may include direct instruction of students as well.
• Students attend the program at the Wellspring Center Monday through Thursday, from 3:00pm
to 7:00pm. Typical office hours for this program are between 9am and 3pm, Monday through
Thursday. Some office hours may be on Fridays.
Hours: This position is typically a full-time position with the possibility of it being a part-time position.

• A sense of mission for urban youth development and community development
• Previous teaching or tutoring experience preferred
• Competent in relating to young people
• Strong skills in math & language arts
• Excellent communication skills
Rate of Pay & Hours: Rate of pay is dependent on experience/skills; approximately $20-30/hour (or
$41,600 – $62,400 for full-time).
